UV Oiled Hardwood Floor Care & Maintenance {Printable Version}

Ecological and environmentally friendly, UV oil contains primarily cold pressed vegetable oils and aromatic hardening oils that penetrate into the surface of the wood floor curing it as well as emphasizing the natural colors of wood. UV Oil Finish allows the natural beauty of the wood to show, as the gloss level is significantly lower than a UV lacquer finish. These oils harden in contact with the wood, forming a protective permanent coat that is thin and flexible so that eventual scratches, dents or even the damage caused by regular use is not as visible and much less noticeable than in high gloss level finishes. Also, the wood can breathe through the oil coat all along its surface, and not just the edges, this will result in a more natural and healthy look of the wood.

UV oiled floors differ from any natural oiled floor because they are cured with UV lights. This option gives the possibility of having a wood flooring that does not require oiling right after installation.

In comparison to urethane finish, UV oiled floors are also easier to repair. Once urethane finish is broken, it is necessary to sand and recoat the entire floor, while in UV oiled floors wiping touchup oil is enough.

Here are some guidelines to give your hardwood floor a proper care to keep it looking its best:

Only WOCA products (www.woodcareusa.com) are recommended to clean, replenish and maintain your UV oil finished hardwood floor. WOCA Soap is a purposemade quality soap, which due to its nourishing properties quickly closes wood pores and protects against dirt and the penetration of liquids. WOCA Soap is ideal for cleaning and maintenance of all oiled wood surfaces. WOCA Soap White is recommended for white or whitewashed products while WOCA Natural Soap is ideal for any other products and species. May be used for the cleaning and maintenance of all known oil systems.

Routine Cleaning Instructions

WOCA Soap must be diluted to 1/4 cup per gallon of lukewarm water.

If the soap solution is not properly mixed, footprints may show on a soaped floor even after drying. This is caused by using too much soap. To remove excess Soap, clean the floor with WOCA Wood Cleaner. Use a good quality mop, such as the WOCA Swep Mop, which has no loose ends.

WOCA Spray Soap is also a great option for spot cleaning or cleaning any smaller areas.

  • Sweep or vacuum the floor before cleaning with WOCA Oil Soap.
  • Shake the container well before use.
  • In one bucket, mix a solution of Oil Soap and lukewarm water. Pour lukewarm water in a second bucket to be used as rinse water.
  • Dip a clean mop in the oil soap solution. Wring the mop. The mop head should retain enough moisture to dampen a 4’ x 8’ section of flooring. Spread the solution across the work area, and then mop the damp area along the direction of the floor boards. For very dirty spots, let the solution set for a few minutes, then come back to the spot and scrub with a dish scrubbing brush. Continue mopping until the mop head becomes dirty or is not moist enough to thoroughly clean.
  • Dip the mop in the rinse water bucket. Slosh around very well. Wring the mop head as thoroughly dry as possible. This will remove dirty water and keep the mop head clean. Do not rinse the previously cleaned floor.
  • Dip the mop in the Oil Soap solution and wring. Clean the next section. If water is still visible on the floor after 2-3 minutes, the mop was too wet. Wipe up excess water and reduce moisture in the mop.
  • Repeat the process until the entire floor has been cleaned.

Future Maintenance

UV oil finished floors should never have to be resanded. However, over time it is necessary to apply more oil to your floor. Traffic patterns or wear areas can be easily eliminated with this step. Typically in a residential application this is anywhere from 5-6 years after initial use of your floor. WOCA Maintenance Oil provides the floor with additional hard wearing properties. Use WOCA Maintenance Oil White on White oiled floors and Maintenance Oil Natural on all others. Follow directions on the label.

Tips for floor protection

  • Maintain room temperature at 60-80°F and humidity at 35-55%
  • Sweep, vacuum or mop regularly
  • Place good quality breathable doormats rugs at the entrance
  • Avoid standing water on the floor, wipe up any liquid immediately
  • Prevent scratches by sticking felt pads under the legs of chairs, tables and any other furniture, and avoid dragging when moving them
  • Use protective mat for office chair or comply with EN12529 for the rollers
  • If you have pets, trim their claws regularly
  • Use only recommended products to clean and maintain the floor
  • All purpose cleaners should NOT be used as they can dull your floor’s finish or leave a hazy residue
  • Do not pour cleaner directly onto the floor
  • Make sure you have special dirttrapping floorings in entrance areas
  • Rearranging furniture periodically will allow your floor to age evenly
  • Avoid the use of steam cleaners in any kind of hardwood floor, regardless the finish, as it will damage the wood

For small scratches and dents simply clean the area and apply Woca brand oil refresher or maintenance oil to the area by brush or rag, let sit for 30 seconds and wipe clean and allow to dry. Tough stains caused by red wine, coffee, etc. can be removed by using WOCA Spot Remover. Simply spray the Spot Remover on the spot and leave approximately 5 minutes to dissolve. Wipe or scrub the spot before wiping it clean. If necessary, repeat the treatment. After removing the spot, the floor should be treated with a small amount of WOCA oil.
